Protecting the Investment on Your Back

Great tips for maximizing your investment in your appearance

Tailored clothing should always be stored on wooden hangars.  This allows wrinkles to fall out and the garment to breathe and rest.  The resting part is especially important:  ideally, a garment should not be worn more than once a week.

Dry clean your tailored clothing only when it is dirty - once per season is usually sufficient.  If your clothing is wrinkled, but not dirty, have it pressed.  Most dry cleaners will charge almost as much for pressing as dry cleaning, but avoid thinking "I may as well have it cleaned then".  Dry cleaning gradually destroys the natural sheen of cloth and should only be done when truly necessary.  If wrinkles are the only problem, pressing is the way to go.

Always have your shirts laundered at a quality commercial cleaner.  Light to medium starch is sufficient to maintain a crisp look.  Remember to remove the collar stays from your dress shirts before sending them to the laundry.

Gently untie the knot in the reverse order it was tied;  avoid pulling the small end through the tie knot.  To help remove wrinkles, carefully roll a tie up and leave it overnight. (By the way, ties are not designed to last forever so don't get too attached to them.)

The Rule of 72 applies to investing and shoe care.  At least 72 hours rest between wearings is recommended to keep your shoes in top shape.  Unfinished cedar shoetrees will help maintain the shape of the shoe and absorb moisture and odors.

Your dark socks should only be washed with other dark colored clothing.  Wash and dry socks inside out to reduce the amount of lint visible on the outside.

Spots are best removed with immediate action;  the longer a stain is left untreated, the harder it is to remove.

Never press over a spot - heat will set the stain.  Club soda can help to prevent a stain from setting.  Water-soluble hair spray dissolves ink on washables.  Rubbing alcohol (not water) works on dry-clean-only clothing.

To remove a stain, put a clean cloth under the fabric, with the stain toward the cloth.  Use a soft fabric to dab the stain remover through the stain until it is gone.  Avoid scrubbing.

Your clothing is an investment in yourself.  Manage it like any other investment, and it will pay dividends for years to come.
